The Vastly Superior Intelligence of Love
There have been huge moments, overwhelming experiences of Divine Love that have blown my concepts apart and marked turning points in my life, but lately it is the little things that are springing up everywhere, like flowers after the winter snow.
The other day at my son’s game, I saw a friend who is recently divorced and was sitting as far apart from the ex as possible. As we were talking, my friend was listing the ways she has been hurt by the ex, and it was getting pretty negative. I have learned through my work in the ministry how we create our reality by what we give our attention to, and it seemed clear that there could be a better reality for my friend, if one could stop talking about the negative. I was praying for inspiration to bust us out of that pattern, when she declared that the ex was behaving in ways that are “just plain stupid.”
What seemed like a low point was a perfect opportunity for God. Without any forethought, out my mouth came this: ”One can only be intelligent when one acts out of Love. Love is the greatest intelligence in the universe.” Believe me, there was no way that thought was cooked up in my little brain. That came through me, not from me. And right away, you could feel things change. Several heads turned our way, people smiled, and the busy vibe of the game was enveloped in a little bubble of peace for a minute. My friend stopped short and a smile came over her face for an instant. I felt so grateful that now we could contemplate the vastly superior intelligence of Love.
Shortly after that, the list of grievances came back out again, and I was reminded how hard it is for us to change patterns of thinking. But that little moment was a break in the deep rut of habitual human thinking, a little miracle of God, a moment of stillness in a busy day. Moments like that have helped me to know for sure that God loves me, loves absolutely every human soul, each so personally, and so perfectly. The more I make these little gifts the focus of my attention, the deeper and more real the relationship with God becomes.
When you have these experiences of God’s Love moving in your life, you just know it, you really know it, in an undeniable, indescribable way. My prayer is for many people to get curious and observant about how Love moves in our lives, in ways that are huge and life altering, and especially in the little ways, the subtle little moments that shine like the sun in springtime.
