Deacon ChristaWe’ve just come through another Lenten season and Easter here at the Denver Center of Light, and every year I am amazed by the beauty, depth and reality of this time. Through our practices, meditations and readings, we truly enter into a unity with Jesus and Mary that is impossible to describe, but so real and powerful. During Lent, we strive to change patterns within ourselves and to offer up these negative patterns to Jesus and Mary. Because of this intention I have found it possible to change things in myself that I’ve struggled with for years, because I’m doing it from a place of love and gratitude. I’ve given up simple things like caffeine and sugar, and deep-seated things like a fear of being powerful. Also during Lent we make small sacrifices such as 24-hour fasts. These sacrifices seem so small in comparison to the great sacrifice of Jesus and Mary for us, and we all have experienced gratitude for being able to give these small sacrifices.

After going through these 40 days of Lent and making these changes and offerings, we each feel changed in very real ways. We feel like different people. We come to sunrise service on Easter morning ready and open to have the risen Lord revealed to us. The beauty of this revelation is profound. We find ourselves in love with Jesus, illuminated by His light, and transformed by His life. This is real Christianity – a faith that transforms us into shining lights.
